Kollin Christianson (from left), Shay LaFave and Jessie Mason honor guests at Ausable Valley Elementary School’s annual Salute to Veterans as they march across the gym floor. Fifth- and sixth-graders, some dressed in the uniforms of family members, performed military demonstrations, gave patriotic readings, and, as they entered and left, saluted the 20 or so veterans there, who’d served in conflicts dating back to World War II. Organized by sixth-grade teacher and military veteran Marty Remillard, the event gave the students the chance to ask the vets about their service. Remillard also presented plaques to family members of four recently deceased veterans: Ralph Jarvis, Napoleon Light, Daniel Meegan and Albert Ston. “Our kids learn best when they can see and experience things such as what freedom means,” Principal Ginene Mason said.
