Spectators gather to listen to members of North Country Honor Flight speak during the Flag Day Ceremony organized by the Keeseville Elks Lodge at Keeseville Veterans Memorial Park. The event commemorated the adoption of the United States flag and also celebrated war veterans. While the Keeseville Elks marked the day on Sunday, the national organization — the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Lodge — created Flag Day in 1907 and by 1911 required every lodge to observe the day, a practice that continues. The Elks urged national adoption of Flag Day to honor the symbol of the United States, and in 1949, President Harry Truman — an Elks member himself — did so.
