Caleb Kingsley, 11, of Brushton, dressed as Almanzo Wilder, stands at the entrance of one of the barns at the Wilder Homestead in Malone during the recent fifthannual Cultural Festival. The book “Farmer Boy,” written by his wife, Laura Ingalls Wilder, portrays his early days on the farm. James Mason Wilder purchased the 84-acre Wilder Homestead in 1840, cleared the land and built the barns that still stand there. He and his wife, Angeline, raised six children, including Almanzo. The Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder Society purchased the farm in 1987 and restored it to reflect the time the Wilders lived there.
