Peru Middle School Dean of Students Matthew Barie (left) and Plattsburgh City Police Patrolman Ryan Tripp watch the first Peru Central School bus roll into the parking lot at Crete Memorial Civic Center in Plattsburgh on Thursday, carrying the students to the designated gathering point during a district-wide campusevacuation drill. About 1,300 of the 1,880-student population were brought to the Crete as State Police and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department responded to the campus in Peru. A simulated gas leak also gave fire departments an opportunity to mobilize, Superintendent of Schools Thomas Palmer said, observing the smooth arrival of one bus after another. “It’s been a very good unifying exercise for all of us,” he said, referring to district faculty and staff as well as law enforcement and first responders.
