After a demonstration for the BBC’s “Great American Railroad Journeys,” Tom LaMar of Port Douglas prepares to drive home his custom-built 1/12-scale model replica of the USS Saratoga, the ship that Commodore Thomas Macdonough commanded in the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814. The boat is radio-controlled with a propeller and rudder, bow thruster, motorized stabilizer, sound system and video system and 26 functional black powder cannons. LaMar and his ship will be featured in the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration parade Saturday, Sept. 9, and during the re-enactment at the Champlain Monument on Sunday, Sept. 10. The British program recently filmed a segment at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Plattsburgh.
