Liam Vogl, 13, of Plattsburgh and George Schock, a Plattsburgh State student, lay flowers on a “ghost bike” dedicated to Yee Hao “Bryan” Chiel. The roadside memorial was placed near the on-ramp for Exit 37 where Chiel was killed last month by a tractor-trailer while riding his bicycle. The ceremony was part of Petal to Protect — an event sponsored by the college’s Biketopia club to promote bike safety and advocate for safer streets for cyclists. Ghost bikes, a tradition that started in 2003 in Missouri, are usually junk bikes painted white and chained to a location near an accident to serve as a somber reminder of bike tragedies and to support cyclists’ rights.
